The Harrais Family Papers consist of the papers of Alaskan teacher and social activist Margaret Keenan Harrais (1872-1964); an unpublished manuscript on Alaska's economic development by her husband, mining engineer Martin Harrais (1865-1936); and a number of family photographs.

Martin Harrais was born in Riga, Latvia, then part of Russia, in 1865, and went to sea at the age of 14. In 1888 he landed in the United States and found work in the shipyards, first in California, then in Seattle, Washington, where he completed his high school education by attending night school. He graduated from the University of Washington in mining engineering in 1897, and three days later joined the Klondike gold rush. Margaret Keenan was born in Batesville, Ohio, in 1872. She came to Alaska in 1914 to assume a post as principal of the Skagway schools, a post she held until 1916. She then accepted the post of superintendent of schools in Fairbanks, which she held until 1918. In 1920, Keenan married Martin Harrais, a miner. In 1924, she joined her husband in McCarthy, Alaska, where she worked as a teacher. After the death of her husband, she became U.S. Commissioner and ex-officio probate judge in Valdez, Alask...
